We're a bit behind this month but we have a request for everyone: ask for more funding for safe cycling infrastructure in local government budgets.
Australia currently spends a pittance on cycling infrastructure, around $0.90 per person annually. This compares with the $714 per person spent on roads, more by a factor of nearly 800!!!
A benchmark for cycling infrastructure funding is Copenhagen, which spends around $30 per person annually.
Given we are 50 years behind the world, we need to catch up and would like you to respond to your local government budget by asking they spend $50 per person in their budgets. If you want to give them reasons why, there are some suggestions at the BikeWest website here.
We're really sorry this is late but the submissions have to be in by:
- Midnight Wednesday May 14th for Maribyrnong,
- 21st May for Hobsons Bay,
- 15th May for Brimbank and
- 20th May for Wyndham.
